Huftalen, Sarah Gillespie papers, 1836-1952.

Papers of Iowa teacher known nationally for her work improving rural schooling. Contains ten volumes of her mother, Emily Hawley Gillespie's diaries and a biography of Emily written by Sarah; papers related to Emily's work with the Civil War Soldier's Relief Society; genealogical information collected by the two women; and a biography and papers from Sarah's brother, Henry Gillespie, a Universalist minister. Sarah's personal papers include seventeen volumes of her diary started at the age of four and a half; scrapbooks; material on her presidency of the Manchester Equal Suffrage Association; and a rich collection of material on Sarah's teaching career. These materials include scrapbooks and minutes from meetings of the Rural Section of the Iowa State Teachers' Association; notes and scrapbooks from Sarah's work at various schools and colleges in Iowa; and eleven volumes of schoolbooks that Sarah used as a student. Also includes a large collection of photographs of Iowa country schools.

Sarah Gillespie Huftalen taught in rural school and was elected superintendent of schools in Page County, Iowa. She helped found, and served as president of the Rural Section of the Iowa State Teachers' Association. Sarah taught both in public schools and colleges until forced to retire at the age of seventy.
